Starting this week, Leap Motion has promised the arrival of its Leap Motion gesture controllers.

Starting this week, Leap Motion has promised the arrival of its Leap Motion controllers. Those that pre-ordered should start seeing their devices on Monday. If you didn’t pre-order, you can order a Leam Motion controller online for $79.99 plus $7.99 shipping.

The Leap Motion controller is a motion sensor that can track all ten fingers on your hands with up to a 1/100th of a millimeter precision. It has a 150 degree field of view and a z-axis so that it can register depth and thus manipulate in 3D.

Obviously the device has an API that provides an easier interface for you, as a developer, to tap into its power. This include being able to handle a number of gestures such as bending, flipping, or folding your hands. It can also tell the difference between fingers, so it knows a pinky is different from a thumb. They have SDKs to support Windows, OSX, and Linux. The Leap Motion JavaScript Library is even on Githup for download.

So have you ordered one yet? If you have one, or if you’ve ordered one, let me know what you do with it. I’d be interested in hearing about any applications that are developed, as I’m sure others here on Codeguru would too. I know the Highland Capital Partners established a Leap Fund of $25 million to use with entrepreneurs that use this technology for breakthrough experiences. They are looking for killer apps. You can find more on what they are doing on Leap Motion’s developer page.

Back in January, Leap Motion stated Best Buy would be carrying these. I was told by Leap Motion's PR rep that these would be on Best Buy shelves starting July 28th. You can pre-order a Leap Motion on BestBuy.com now!

With a price point of just $80 and a very small form factor, it will be interesting to see what developers and others do with these.
