Your first clue is the language that operating systems themselves are created with--and that's C and C++. While application programmers moved on to C# and .NET, Windows system programmers continued using C++ to create COM interfaces. The word is still out for Windows 8, but the Microsoft Visual C++ team has been very active lately, and there has been a hint that it may be "re-discovered" as WinC++, a new, yet old language.
