In 2011, it was internet giants Google and Apple that grabbed the mobile spotlight, but 2012 is poised to be a different story with a different giant. Microsoft is taking huge steps lately with its Windows Phone 7 OS, and the coming year may once again be enormous for both Microsoft and mobile.

In 2011, it was internet giants Google and Apple that grabbed the mobile spotlight, but 2012 is poised to be a different story with a different giant. Microsoft is taking huge steps lately with its Windows Phone 7 OS, and the coming year may once again be enormous for both Microsoft and mobile.

Microsoft's Windows Phone OS will have two tiers: Tango, which is geared towards smartphones, and Apollo, which is geared towards businesses. The Windows OS itself will showcase the Metro-style user interface (UI), which is also the UI that mobile Windows devices will sport--the synergy is growing, and Microsoft may just gain back the stronghold they lost in the last decade.
