Given the scale of both Microsoft Office and Microsoft SharePoint among consumers and business users, providing developers with a chance to reach both markets greatly increases their potential customer base. With Microsoft extending Office and SharePoint stores into new markets they are also broadening their possible user-base of developers who are building for these platforms.
